The Best Astrophotography Spots in the UK
There’s something truly magical about standing beneath a sky full of stars, camera in hand, capturing the vast beauty of the universe. The UK may not always be blessed with clear skies, but when the conditions are right, there are some incredible locations for astrophotography.
My Favourite Spots In The UK
1. Northumberland International Dark Sky Park
Recognised as one of the largest Dark Sky Parks in Europe, Northumberland offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Milky Way. With low levels of light pollution, places like Kielder Observatory provide perfect conditions for astrophotography. The vast, open landscapes create incredible foregrounds, whether it’s the silhouette of the forest or the still waters of Kielder Water reflecting the starlit sky.
2. Snowdonia National Park, Wales
Snowdonia’s rugged landscapes make for a dramatic setting for night sky photography. Designated as a Dark Sky Reserve, it’s an exceptional location to capture star trails, the Milky Way, and even meteor showers. Llyn y Dywarchen, a tranquil lake nestled in the mountains, is one of my favourite spots to shoot stunning celestial reflections.
3. Brecon Beacons, Wales
Another Dark Sky Reserve, the Brecon Beacons offers some of the most pristine dark skies in the UK. Areas like Usk Reservoir and Llangorse Lake provide stunning compositions, especially when you can capture the stars rising over the rolling hills or reflected in the still waters. The park is also known for its frequent appearances of the zodiacal light, a faint glow that adds an ethereal quality to night shots.
Tips for Capturing the Night Sky
Wherever you go to photograph the stars, here are a few tips to get the best results:
Use a sturdy tripod – Essential for keeping long exposures sharp and steady.
Shoot in manual mode – Adjusting your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO will help you get the best exposure.
Find a dark location – The further from artificial light pollution, the better.
Check the weather and moon phase – Clear skies and a new moon will give you the best visibility.
Experiment with foreground elements – Trees, water, or landmarks can add drama to your shots.
The UK has some incredible spots for astrophotography, each offering its own unique landscape and atmosphere. Follow my journey as I explore more breathtaking night sky locations across the UK and beyond.
